A day before a UN global conference on migration, the US pulled out of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants. The Declaration calls for a 'more humane approach', with migration being 'safe, orderly and regular'. The Trump administration views the Declaration as incompatible with its national sovereignty. The move is likely to freeze the relations between the US and the UN even further, as the US previously pulled out of the UN climate change agreements and Unesco.
After the results started dropping in on Wednesday following the presidential election earlier that week, Honduras faces a political crisis. The opposition's candidate Salvador Nasralla, who initially seemed to win, appears to be losing the election to the incumbent Juan Orlando Hernández. The election and the subsequent turmoil has attracted attention from around the world, with the European Parliament and the Organisation of American Churches calling for tensions to calm down.

The vote, which saw 251 out of 513 deputies vote in favour of Temer, went in his favour despite low approval rates. Temer got to power after Dilma Roussef's impeachement in August, but has since been plagued by scandals. The charges of corruption emerged out of a national inquirery into corruption among Brazil's political class, which has seen dozens of politicians accused and tried already. This might also be why Temer secured the vote, as many of the deputies themselves stand accused of corruption too.

The centre-right His Cambiemos (Let's Change) movement won in 13 of Argentina's 23 provinces, including the five most populous urban areas. The president promised reforms but still needs alliances in the congress, as his movement is still a minority bloc. The split in the opposition, however, seems to give him space to get on with his legislative reformist agenda.

His aim is to renegotiate such trade agreements or to step out if the demands of the USA are not met.
Mexico fired back in response to American President Donald Trump’s tweets demanding that the country pays for the border wall that President Trump promised during his campaign. President Trump said that it was necessary for Mexico to pay, due to high crime rates in the country. He also said that Mexico is being ‘very difficult’ in renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement and simultaneously threatening to withdraw the United States from the agreement. Mexico has also released a statement saying that the country will not negotiate any areas of its bilateral relations with the US via social media.

The attack was an act against President Nicolas Maduro and his ‘murderous tyranny’. Of the 20, two were captured, eight killed and the remaining half escaped. President Maduro claimed the group has ties with the United States and Colombia. This comes soon after the dismissal of Attorney General Luisa Ortega, which, many regional states have sharply criticized the act as being illegal. The United States is accusing Maduro of creating an ‘authoritarian dictatorship’.

The establishment of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China comes simultaneously with the severing of diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which now leaves only 20 countries having such relations with Taiwan, the majority of them being in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Panama has additionally made a promise not to establish official relations or contact with Taiwan.

There was only a 23% voter turnout, which resulted in 97% being in support of statehood. There was a boycott, however, which could explain the low voter turnout comparing to its normal roughly 80% rate. Despite the boycott, the referendum is non-binding, but the Governor of Puerto Rico intends on pressuring the U.S. Congress to admit Puerto Rico as the newest state.
