13 June 2017: Panama cuts ties, pivots toward China
Panama has announced in a statement that there is only one China and that Taiwan is really a province of China. The establishment of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China comes simultaneously with the severing of diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which now leaves only 20 countries having such relations with Taiwan, the majority of them being in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Panama has additionally made a promise not to establish official relations or contact with Taiwan.
