In the past few days, members of the OAS (Organization of American States) have been discussing Venezuela’s situation. In particular, the decision by Luis Almagro’s - who is the Secretary-General of OAS - to invoke the Democratic Charter over the current political crisis in Venezuela was spoken about. The decision could have resulted in the country being suspended from OAS. Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Delcy Rodriguez, gave a speech which was considered to have had a substantial impact on the final decision in which most of the countries declared their support in taking further action to assess the legitimacy of Almagro’s action, for which 19 voted in favor, 12 voted against and 3 abstained.

The group of opposition deputies was trying to get into the election council headquarters in Caracas in order to demand the agency to accelerate the procedure of the authentication of the signatures of the voters. Pictures circulating around the globe show Julio Borges, a Congressman being injured by a man, that Borges identified as one of the government supporters.

The biggest Brazilian television network TV Globo broadcasted the recording and the newspaper O Globo printed an additional editorial demanding Silveira's resignation.

Read MoreFollowing the previous decision of the Lower House of Congress which approved the impeachment procedure of the President Dilma Rousseff, Eduardo Cunha, speaker of the Lower House of Congress and one of the biggest opponents of the current Brazilian President, was suspended by the Supreme Court from all congressional duties. Cunha is investigated for the alleged impeding of corruption investigations and intimidation of lawmakers. This suspension seems to be greatly significant since in case of the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, Eduardo Cunha would become Vice-President of Brazil. Cunha was in fact the next in line for the Presidency after Michel Temer, who is also facing impeachment procedure. This decision comes a few weeks after Cunha led a charge to impeach President Dilma Rousseff in the Chamber of Deputies. However, Rousseff accuses both Cunha and Temer of plotting a coup against her.

A victory of Donald Trump already seemed evident during earlier primaries, despite the efforts of the Republican establishment to stop him and the effort of the ''Never Trump'' movement. Ted Cruz and John Kasich had also attempted to work together to stop him. The hope of bringing about a contested convention however has been destroyed now as well for the Republican Party, which is broadly divided about Donald Trump, as a significant part of the party does not endorse him.

It confirmed the trend of the primary earlier in New York. As expected, Donald Trump won all states in the Republican contest. His victory however turned out bigger as expected since even his two opponents together did not even get close to Trump's victory percentages. Prior to the elections, they had declared to cooperate on beating Trump. None of them won a state however nor sufficient delegates, making the chances of a "contested convention" slimmer. Hillary Clinton also beat Bernie Sanders in all states except for Rhode Island, ending the momentum Bernie Sanders had for a while. The latter has also acknowledged a victory would be impossible at this stage, however wants to go on to have as much influence as possible with his self-declared "revolution" to change politics in the Democratic Party and bring about a shift of policies to the left.

On Friday, Pierre Louis Opont, President of Haiti's electoral council, said the vote scheduled for Sunday was being pushed back for security reasons. A new date for the runoff has not been set. Opposition candidate Jude Celestin vowed to boycott the election, alleging a first round vote in October was rigged to favor the ruling party candidate.
On 19 April 2016, US primaries were held in the state of New York. As expected and confirmed in recent polls, both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton secured their victories. Donald Trump won by an astonishing percentage of 60,4%, leaving John Kasich and Ted Cruz far behind him with 25,1% and 14,5% respectively. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, secured a victory of 58%, compared to 42% for Bernie Sanders.
The Brazilian Lower House of Congress approved the impeachment procedure of the President Dilma Rousseff on Sunday night 17 April. A two-thirds majority of votes was required in the Chamber of Deputies, composed of 513 members, in order to approve the impeachment motion. The final vote was 367 for impeachment and 137 against. Due to this decision, the impeachment measure will now move directly to the Senate, where only a simple majority is needed to decide on whether to hold a trial which could force Rousseff to step down. If the majority approves it, the Brazilian first female President will be forced to resign for at least 180 days in order to prepare to her trial which will be crucial for her political career. Rousseff is accused of breaking budget laws by manipulating the government account back in 2014.
