The US decided on Wednesday to move their embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The decision is controversial, as it means a de facto recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The Trump administration argues that this merely awknowledges a reality, as all of Israel's government institutions are based in Jerusalem. The foreign embassies, however, are based in Tel Aviv.

The administration further argues that it is implementing a law of the 1990s, which states that the embassy has to be moved. Up to now, the US presidents have delayed this move because of security and political reasons. The move faces criticism around the globe. France, for instance, argues that it sidelines the Palestinian Authority, thus endangering the fragile peace process.
