Accusations of 'barbarism' have been addressed to Russia for its recent actions in Syria, concerning a recent intensification of the bombings over Aleppo. The emergency United Nations Security Council meeting was held on the 25th of September. The meeting was called by the ambassadors of France, Britain and the United States who have addressed Russia with criticism concerning the increasing of the attacks over the Northern of the city. The meeting was called soon after the Syrian regime declared their offensive towards Eastern Aleppo, home to 275,000 civilians, 231 of which were killed in the attacks.
The Syrian Ambassador to United Nations, Bashar Jaafari, spoke out against a 'filthy propaganda war' initiated by the United States and its allies.
The Russian ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, replied stating that the actions intended to remove terrorists from Aleppo. Churkin also stated that bringing peace to Syria was "almost an impossible task now," however concluded that reviving the ceasefire was still an objective of Moscow that would be realized if it consisted of 'collective' efforts on all sides.
The United Nations special envoy on Syria, Steffan de Mistura urged the Security Council to press for a cessation of hostilities, in order to deliver aid and for medical evacuations in Eastern Aleppo. The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for an end to the offensive in Aleppo, concluding: "International law is clear, he said, the systematic use of indiscriminate weapons in densely populated areas is a war crime."
