On Thursday, August 4, Chancellor of Austria - Christian Kern commented the launched discussions of European leaders on the withdrawal from further negotiations with Turkey. During the interview with Austrian television ORF, Kern drew his beliefs on Turkey and said: "We should all press the “reset" in relations with Turkey." The Chancellor also announced that it would propose a debate on the issue of breaking the accession negotiations with Turkey and present the issue at the top – at the level of European Council on 16 September.

According to Kern, Turkey for decades will not be a good candidate because of political and economic events. The Chancellor added that democratic standards are not met by Turkey sufficiently. Very important is the issue of the economy - a place Turkey ranks very far from the European average.
Turkish Minister for European Affairs - Omer Celik said that the statements of the Austrian chancellor to break the negotiations on Turkey's accession to the European Union are too critical. "Criticism is certainly a democratic right, but there must be a difference between criticizing Turkey, and making Turkey against the Europe," - said Celik in Ankara.
