Australia has been fighting with refugee crisis for a long time. For government, there are to solutions for this problem: forcing to leave the country or they must be sent to third countries. The second solution has been attracted international criticism. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hasn’t supported this policy. At the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, he said that all countries should have found new long-term solutions for refugees. Ban Ki - Moon wanted Australia to take more refugees every year.
In Australia a policy against refugees is supported by the two main political parties, the center-right Liberal/National Coalition and center-left Labor, but rejected by minor party the Australian Greens. Greens believe that Coalition’s policy breaks rules of international law and also has an influence on relations with other countries, for example with Indonesia.
The government can not undertake policy against refugees, because Australia is one of signatories to the Refugee Convention in Southeast Asia. So Australia is responsible for respecting refugees’ rights and offering fair procedures.
The Australian Government discussed with Kyrgyzstan and the Philippines about taking refugees. Sometimes we can hear about negotiations with Canada.
