Today the Prime Ministers of Canada and China have met in Beijing. It is the first official visit of Justin Trudeau in China. The purpose of Trudeau’s visit was mainly to improve economic ties between the two countries. The men have so far discussed trade issues as well as the case of Kevin Garatt, Canadian citizen held in China due to accusations of espionage. Chinese Prime Minitser Li reassured Canadianas that the two countries will stay in dialogue as to the case of Garatt, and that he can expet lawful treatment in China.

During the meeting the two leaders have also discussed Canadian canola shipments to China. Li confirmed that Canada will be exempt from the tougher import standards that were to take effect on the 1st of September. It is a case important for Canada, as China is the country’s top export market for oilseeds. The Chinese Prime Minister emphasized that he has no intention of closing the door for imports, especially those from Canada, but Chinese farmers and consumers are concerned about imported pests. Later today negotiating teams from both countries will work on a long-term solution for Canadian canola shipments to China that will satisfy both sides.
