From Monday 29th August 2016 (05:00 GMT) main rebel group FARC announced a definitive ceasefire ending ongoing conflict from 52 years. FARC actions included: drug trafficking, bombing, kidnapping which led to the designation of this organization as a terrorist group by both United States and the European Union. Peace accord was announced on 24th of August 2016 in Havana where the peace talks have been conducted. Peace negotiations leading to current deal started in 2012 in Havana and led to cease fire signed in June.
It was the last step before the 'full' deal signed on Wednesday 24th by President Juan Manuel Santos and Timoleón Jiménez (Timochenko) ending the conflict which resulted in the death of around 220 000 people and displacing 7 million.
The decision of the peace deal includes demilitarization of FARC, which will handle their weapons to the United Nations observers, clear mine fields and eradicate coca plantations. The Colombian government is going to invest billions of dollars in the development of the mountain and jungle areas controlled in the past by FARC. The government has agreed not to rule over former guerilla fighters if they plead guilty.
Despite the live transition from Havana and cheering crowds on Bogota's streets large part of the society including politicians are not optimistic about the peace deal. Recent opinion polls show that 88% Colombia think that FARC commanders should serve jail time and 75% claim that they should be banned from politics.
