On Monday, Colombia's Constitutional Court approved the proposal to use a plebiscite to submit the peace accord between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the government. The conservative government of Juan Manuel Santos now has to call for a plebiscite within a month. The peace deal will be formally approved if a minimum 13 percent or 4 million people vote in favor of it out of a population of 33 million that is eligible to vote. Considerable criticism was drawn from Santos's decision to ask Colombians to respond to one question with a yes or no answer. Former president, now opposition Senator Alvaro Uribe argued that it does not allow voters to reject specific aspects of the peace agreement, which some FARC units also want to put on the table for discussion.

The historic peace deal was signed on June 23rd by the FARC and the Santos administration. However, some FARC units oppose the deal arguing that the deals being reached in Cuba will not solve the social and economic problems which were the primary motivations for the group to take arms in 1964.
