22 April 2016: 175 countries sign Paris Agreement in New York
22 April marked the official Earth Day and 175 countries attended the high-level signing ceremony of the Paris Agreement in New York. This is by far the largest number of countries that have signed an international agreement on the first day it was open for signature. About 15 nations, mainly small island states, had already ratified the agreement. The Paris Agreement came out of negotiations at the COP21 summit in Paris last December.
