New Zealand’s trade minister Todd McClay established a trade policy dialogue with his British counterpart, Liam Fox. Britain and New Zealand have agreed to establish regular negotiations in the area of trade policy in order to give an incentive for even greater liberalization of world trade and its reform, Fox said. Since the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union, it has aimed to strengthen trade relations with the countries outside of the Union.
UK formally can’t sign any deals until it leaves the block. The process of leaving will take two years from the moment when the negotiations begin. “For New Zealand, this is about being ready to cement our formal trading relationship with our fifth largest trading partner, once the UK is in a position to negotiate independently of the European Union”, McClay said.
British Trade minister Liam Fox said that “[t]his new trade policy dialogue reflects the solid political commitment of New Zealand and the United Kingdom to take the initiative in promoting greater liberalization of world trade and reform”, adding that he looks forward to work closely with New Zealand.
