In light of the recent protests throughout Poland, the Polish lawmakers voted on Thursday to reject the recent abortion ban. In the last week, many women have protested around the country in complete rage over the proposal. The ban, proposed by an anti-abortion group, would have imposed much stricter regulations on abortions than those already in place. Among the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe, Poland's laws only allowed the procedure to be done in the case of rape or incest. The law proposed would have forced women to carry out their term.
Additionally, the proposal would have charged women who do get abortions to up to five years in jail. Among many of the complaints about the proposal, people were weary that women who might experience miscarriages would be charged with jail time. The outcome of the vote was a huge loss for the ruling party. Prime Minister Beata Szydlo promised to take other measure to ensure the protection of human life.
