Scotland will not be able to veto the negotiations on the exit of Great Britain from the EU, but the Scottish Government will take part in the discussions in formulating the position of official London in the negotiations with the European Union, said British Prime Minister Theresa May. According to her, in preparation for Brexit the government will take into account not only Scotland’s opinion but also that of other parts of the United Kingdom.

Scotland wants detailed information how UK will leave the EU to prevent a “hard Brexit”. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Tuesday said that such a scenario, in which the United Kingdom may lose access to the European Union’s single market, would damage the Scottish economy. Ms. Sturgeon claimed that Theresa May has no mandate for a hard Brexit.

Theresa May was asked about the fact that 62% Scottish people voted to stay in the European Union and replied that “overall” the British people they had made their decision and the UK will leave the EU. She said that the Scottish government will be “fully engaged […] on the issues that particularly matter to Scotland” but made it clear that there is no possibility of reviewing the results of the referendum on Brexit.

Scottish people rejected independence in 2014, but in July 2016 they voted to stay in the EU while Wales and England voted to leave.
