Centrum Stosunków Międzynarodowych - 21 February 2017: Azerbaijan’s president names his wife as vice president

Ilham Aliyev, has appointed his wife Mehriban Aliyeva as a first vice president after constitutional referendum in September. Mehriban established, in 2004, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation which is the largest non-governmental organization. Azerbaijan has been controlled by Aliyev family since five decades. This move is seen as a part of strategy to strenghten the control over the country, observers indicate that in Azerbaijan elections were not fair.
