China and India yesterday held a new round of consultations on arms control. The consultations were held under the joint chairmanship of the Director of the Department of Arms Control Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Qiong and Director of the Department of Disarmament and International Security Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India Amandeep Singh Gill. The parties came to an understanding that the entry of the party which "is not a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons of the country" in the Nuclear Suppliers Group is essentially a multilateral issue that can be resolved only by achieved through consultation the consent of all members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Dialog at the bilateral level should be the assistance for corresponding debates within the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

Chinese party indicated that application of "non-signatory to the Treaty on thxe Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons country” to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group is a new issue this group will have to face in the new situation. The Chinese side stands for the settlement of the Nuclear Suppliers Group of the issue in two steps - first to discuss and find a non-discriminatory and applicable to all countries in a similar scheme of solution, and then on the basis of this scheme again to discuss the issue of joining this party to "non-signatories to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation Treaty countries ". China is ready to become active and engaged into the process of the above-mentioned discussions within the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

The parties believe that these consultations have been positive, sincere, pragmatic and very constructive. The parties expressed their intention to strengthen dialogue on the relevant issues, agreed to at the right time to be held in China next round of consultations on arms control.
